It has become increasingly popular for people to use auction websites, such as eBay, to buy a house online. For some people, the idea probably sounds great.
Instead of traveling halfway across the country, or even across the state, to look at a house, all that you need to do is look at the pictures on the internet and place your bid.
It all sounds so simple. Is buying a house online a really good idea, though? Here are just a few of the many different reasons to avoid buying a house online.
Are the Pictures of the House Accurate?
When you look at pictures of a house online, it is important to think about whether or not the pictures are actually an accurate representation of what the house really looks like. Is this house really that attractive or are the photos nothing more than glamour shots?
Did the person who took the pictures get good angles and then use a graphic editing program to ensure that the home looked worthy enough for someone to buy? It’s also important to consider how many pictures of the house have been provided for you to see.
If there are only two pictures of the house, one of a Jacuzzi bathtub and one of an indoor pool, does this necessarily mean that the rest of the house is gorgeous?
Or does it just mean that these two particular rooms are gorgeous? Until you have walked around the home, you will not be able to see whether the pictures accurately show what the house looks like, inside and out.
Can You Tell if the House Has Any Damage?
Are you able to tell if the house has any damage just by judging from the photos provided online? Can you see if any of the tiles in the kitchen need to be fixed or if the roof is leaking?
Or is the house in perfect condition, but not accurately represented by the pictures? This really goes back to whether or not the pictures of the house are accurate.
Once again, you will not really know exactly what the house looks like until you walk into it – a huge reason to avoid buying a house online. Unless you are willing to cough up the cost of repairs that you did not know about until after you have bought a house online, it is a good idea to make sure that you visit the home to check out everything before you agree to anything.
How Can You See the Area the Home is Located in?
When you buy a home that you looks nice online, you are making the assumption that it is also in a nice area. What are you going to do if you find out after you have already bought the house and moved in that the neighborhood is a very violent one?
When you go to visit a home with a realtor, you can ask questions about these things. Even when you visit a home that is for sale by owner, you can at least see the area with your own eyes. If you do plan to buy a house online, you will want to at least consider doing a decent amount of research on the area that the home is located in.
These are just three of the many, many reasons you may want to avoid buying a house online. Although the internet is a great way to find pictures of houses that you may be interested in eventually purchasing, it is always a good idea to visit the house before you actually commit to buy.
Unfortunately, you never know what may go wrong if you buy a home before you actually see it. There are so many scammers out there right now that you have to hope that the pictures someone posts on the internet of their home are actually of that home and not the mansion down the street.
